Am closing out both this rollercoaster of a year AND the Fandom 50 posts with one of the most wonderful surprises ever: goddess incarnate IU's guest episode in Suchwita.

Earlier in the year, SUGA had appeared in IU's Palette show, cheekily throwing a challenge of sorts down that IU would have to appear in his interview show if the YT views ever reached 10M. FWIW, they're a little over 7M at time of this post, so fairly close to the target number. :P

In any case, I almost couldn't believe it when the teaser dropped and, boy, did I ended up astral projecting out of the sheer JOY that it was seeing IU and SUGA chit-chat for nearly an hour! As of right now, this is the officially longest episode at 43:50. NGL, I could've rolled just as good had the episode been the full hour and 40 mins of footage.

A lot of the episode focused on IU's fantastic 15-year career, her observations on where she'd like to go next, the UAENA fandom and her connection to it, and (ofc) her 2 collabos with SUGA. For his part, Yoongi added in bits abt his own experiences doing solo concerts, songwriting obstacles and triumphs, etc.

This being a Suchwita ep, there were also a few revelations that left me SHOOKETH. And, like many UAENA out there, I am hoping like whoa that IU does get to go on a tour. It'd be a SUCH A DREAM to see her singing live-live, heheh. ANYWAYS, what made this such a lively episode was IU and SUGA's back-and-forth. Theirs is a connection of artistry, talent, and intense sibling energy. Given that they're both 93z, the flow of the convo switched from informal to formal (which was neat to see) with a lot of snark from both IU and SUGA.

FWIW, I'm not quite sure IF I'll be doing this challenge in 2024, but who knows, right? ANYHOO, thank you to the folks who have commented on my K-Pop ramblings thru this year. I hope 2024 is a safe, happy, and fun year for everyone. <3

NGL, I've had to the most to calm the fuck down in order to do a post with a semblance of coherence. Because, this was one of the most happy surprises this show has ever done.

Cuz the idea of SHINee's TAEMIN BEING A GUEST ON SUCHWITA????? LORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDE! (❤ ω ❤)

*Calming down*

On top of seeing him and SUGA interact, what makes this a MUST-SEE episode can only be brought up bulletpoint style:

* Taemin and Yoongi are both 93z--something that, as mentioned by both of them, is a rarity in K-pop. Not many 1993 folks became idols.

* Taemin is his group's maknae while Yoongi's considered the second oldest (after Jin). So their idol experiences are v. different w/r/t the members' dynamics.

* Taemin is also technically Yoongi's sunbaenim (senior) since SHINee debuted 5 years before BTS.

* Both are v. influential for different reasons that each admire in the other.

It's not like Taemin and Yoongi were total strangers. More like fellow idols who would chit-chat in a general way while doing their respective promotions. If anything, Taemin's connection to BTS is usually focused on his v. close friendship with Jimin.

*Takes a deep breath*

WHICH MAKES JIMIN'S RANDOM APPEARANCE HALFWAY THRU THIS EPISODE A MILLION TIMES AWESOMER. From then on, there's Taemin and Yoongi's nascent friendship, Yoongi and Jimin's bond (no explanation needed), Taemin and Jimin's besties' vibes, and all three having a friendly convo.

This is deffo one of those episodes I've rewatched a few times cuz the tone is lulzy, the conversation goes from introspective to casual, and the overall mood is extremely cordial.

glitteryv: (Default)
Another batch of Suchwita episodes! This time following the them of older folks and SUGA discussing different facets of being an artist.

Kim Namgil's episode is, sadly for me, among the least-watched. Mainly cuz he's a TALKER. So for every short question SUGA will throw at him, Kim Namgil will take eons to answer. One interesting thing is that he is one of Seokjin's close friends (to the point of appearing in the last episode of Jin's show abt traditional Korean alcohol. OTOH, Kim Namgil is a multihyphenated human being, so there's also that.

Then there's Kim Jongwan, main vocalist and guitarist of the Korean band NELL. SUGA and Kim Jongwan have been friends for a while. Also, for those who might not know, Jongwan also sang in AgustD's D-2 song "Dear My Friend". He has a uniquely sweet voice.

FTR, the bulk of this episode centers around the creative burnout, choosing one's path while navigating the music business, and how to prepare concerts so that the audience will have a great time. NELL has been around since 2001, so there are parts of the episode that mention what longevity means as well.

Uhm Jungwha is Suchwita's second female guest. It's a v. memorable episode, NGL.

For starters, like the other two guests I mentioned before, Jungwha has a long career (acting debut in 1993, singing debut in 1996.) She's gone thru a lot of ups and downs, influencing a lot of idols to this day, and has truly earned her legendary status.

Even though I wasn't familiar with her work, I've watched this episode in particular many times. Jungwha and SUGA's convo is tremendously charming. It's lively and fun in a way that's extremely refreshing to watch in terms of difference in ages, genders, and experiences. I highly, highly rec this episode.

Bonus fact: Uhm Jungwhat was among the 100 or so folks that Hobi personally invited to the listening party for his Jack in the Box album. I really love the fact that Hobi connects with folks from all aspects of the Korean entertainment business, IDK.

glitteryv: (Default)
How abt a double-layered return to Suchwita? ;)

Filmed on September 3rd (but not airing until Nov. 4th), episode 21 of SUGA's talk show had the first guest to do a second appearance: Jungkook sitting down to have some noms in between talking abt his solo adventures. Early on in the episode, Yoongi acknowledged that Jungkook's first ep was a bit chaotic because, realistically, he (JK) only had one song to promote.

This time around, he had a full album plus several performances to chit-chat with his hyung. As much as I loved the loopy vibes of JK's first episode, I really preferred the way things flowed this time around. The conversation had more depth (in terms of Jungkook's own musical tastes and colors) with some funny asides. ON TOP OF THAT, Jungkook drops a v. mild spoiler that he and Jimin filmed some kind of travel vlog show at some point this year. #EXCITE

Even better, halfway thru the episode, Yoongi sat up and turned around, calling Taehyung from his hiding place. So the fun vibes went up a few levels and everyone (including the viewers) had an even better time.

As a bonus, here's an 18-minute surprise concert that Jungkook did on Times Square on Nov. 9th of this year:

Today I want to include a lot of random stuff that I couldn't quite fit elsewhere. Groups and artists include: NMIXX, Mamamoo, BSS, STAYC, fromis_9, SEVENTEEN, and B.I.

There are a little under 20 videos, so I'm adding a cut for y'all's benefit

* NMIXX dropped the MV for “Soñar (Breaker)”, the pre-release for their upcoming album and I am STILL processing how great it is!

Trigger warning:: visual f/x including distortion, camera tilts, fast cuts, and busy background graphics.

OK, so not only did they returned to the MIXXPOP chaos but the switch ups are v. smooth. I genuinely am over the moon with this song. To me, it does EXACTLY what a pre-release is supposed to do: hype listeners up for the album. CANNOT. WAIT.

To know me, is to know that I LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURVE dance practices. So there we are. :DDDD

A performance video in order to really enjoy watching this amazing group's dancing talents.

"Run for Roses" is a song they haven't performed as much. I'm 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 that it appears somewhere on their upcoming album tracklist. LOVE it (despite the fact that is more conventional, i.e. it doesn't have any of the wild switch ups that some ppl loathe).

Trigger warning: The background graphic goes by v. fast. It can make you dizzy

* Fave performances from "It's Live"

Mamamoo showing everyone that they're SINGERS

BSS

fromis_9

STAYC

What a fun performance!

* SEVENTEEN did a lot of comebacks. My fave 2023 title track is deffo "Super". TALK ABT BUDGET!!!

The dance practice

My fave live performance

Trigger warning: Lots of flashing lights, busy background graphic, and the audience is doing a v. loud fanchant.

* B.I. "BTBT"

The hold this song has had on me this year, y'all!!! I love EVERYTHING abt it: from the beat, to B.I.'s cadence and flow, and the lyrics (which are tremendously romantic).

This is my top MV version of the song:

It's such a great video! 😍😍😍

There's a version with Soulja Boy that's okayish?

Let me add the Dance Practice first

and the Performance MV

Finally, a behind-the-scenes look at how difficult the whole choreo actually is:

glitteryv: (Default)
This is a grab bag of 10 episodes of LeeMujin Service featuring male and female idols showing everyone a thing or two abt having singing talent. Each episode goes for abt 30 mins or so. Since I've already done a post abt the one centered around Jimin, I've opted to not include it on this list. ;)

ETA: for the curious, the groups these folks are members of are (in no particular order): NMIXX, the BOYZ, STAYC, LOONA, and SHINee.

No commentary needed other than I hope y'all have a good time while checking out at least one of these episodes. :D

I'm also using a cut to save your reading pages (cuz I'm nice like that.)

Today's post is a 2-for-1 that closes out the GIRL GROUPS ARE AWESOME portion of this posting series. :D

First up is this 35-min exploration of fromis_9's discography. I've been in K-pop long enough to see a lot of newer (2021-onwards) folks be weirdly dismissive of this girl group. Granted, even Pledis and HYBE (their immediate agencies) seem (most of the time) reluctant to allocate resources for this 8 (initially 9) girl group. Which is a shame because they are (just like most (if not all) idols) hella talented and charismatic. They also have a really good music trajectory that's peaked (as of time of this post) with the AWESOMECAKIEST (NON-BTS) ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Unlock My World. A true masterpiece, zero skips type of an album. This is, to me, an even better album than my beloved NewJeans' AND Le Sserafim's music releases this year. The level of sophistication and just 'let me sink in to this song cuz wow' that fromis_9 has achieved with Unlock My world should've been enough for it to be a more popular output. Alas.

At least they're having a 2-day concert next month.

ANYWAYS, winterosy's video came out January 2022, so it doesn't include his analysis of 2023's Album of the Year. HOWEVER, it's a really good dive into WHY ppl who like girl groups, great songs, meaningful lyrics, and a sense of fun SHOULD give fromis_9 a try.

And now for a CELEBRATION!

Yes, this is another video essay from winterosy, LOL. What can I say? The dude is hella creative when it comes to K-Pop video essays! ANYWAYS, here's a 21-minute video on girl groups, why their music is worth listening to, and a bit of the girl group musical journey. Although it does lean a tad heavily on 4th gen ggs (which he himself admits in the video), there are deffo shoutouts to other generations. I also really like that he is showing the VARIETY of gg music that exists within K-Pop. It's not only cute and bubbly or girl crush.

*Raises her cup of coffee to toast ggs*

Le Sserafim is a 5 (originally 6) member group that debuted a little over a year ago. As the first official HYBE girl group in a long time, expectations couldn't be higher. Especially once folks learned some of the young women that signed with HYBE/Source Music. Its name is an anagram for I'm Fearless.

The makeup was interesting: 1 semi-professinal ballerina (Kazuhua), 2 newer trainees (Eunchae and Kim Garam), 1 veteran trainee (Yunjin), and 2 former bandmates circa IZ*ONE (Chaewon and Sakura.) It's worth pointing out that, w/r/t the last two members, this was the 2nd group that Chaewon debuted one and the third one for Sakura. As I understand it, Sakura wasn't keen on re-debuting AGAIN but the Hybe/Source Music offer was too good to pass.

In any case, shortly after debuting, the group got caught up on past bullying accusations (for Kim Garam) that, had it been another company, would've probably sunk the group. Instead, Le Sserafim continued debut era as 5 unofficially until late July 2023 when it was announced that Garam was out for realsies.

Le Sserafim went on doing their thing, supported by Chaewon (as the leader) and Sakura (as the matunnie.) They've done two full comebacks (for actual albums vs. eps or digital singles.) The latest one ("Unforgiven") had a pretty solid title track...and the most unexpectedly AWESOMECAKES b-side ever: "Eve, Psyche & Bluebeard's Wife".

This Jersey Club-inspired song took over as one of THE biggest hits of 2023. I couldn't help but make the connection with the (Black and brown) ballroom scene + I liked the way the long title worked w/r/t the themes (of women pushing past taboos and forging a new path) of the song. IIRC, it had something like 5 or 6 remixes with a ton of folks including my girl BIBI.

The MV

Trigger warnings: the camera work is non-stop. There are lots of flashing lights too.

No one knew there was going to be an MV, but this song ended becoming so big I feel it almost eclipsed "Unforgiven"'s status? Some ppl have said they wished this song had been title track instead, but I'm not wholly convinced abt that.

The Dance practice

My fave live performance

Trigger warning: Typical Korean music show camerawork (zooming in and out, tilting); flashing lights; busy background graphics; fans are singing-screaming along

Another fave (but not live) performance

Trigger warning: Typical Korean music show camerawork (zooming in and out, tilting); flashing lights;

This is perfect if you want to get a clearer sense of the choreo in action, so speak.

The docus

Le Sserafim released a 4-part documentary called The World is Your Oyster that tracks most of the beginnings of the group. OTOH, I like that it's on the shorter end (a little over an hour long) and available for free on YT via the group's official channel. OTOH, it's a sort of retcon on how Le Sserafim came to be as Kim Garam has been edited out of the narrative. There's also ZERO mention of the bullying scandal and its aftermath.

It's been a while since I first watched it, but I know that the most that gets shown of her is, like, an arm.

Anyways, winterosy (one of my fave K-pop channels on YT) did a BRILLIANT 34-min video essay on Le Sserafim's discography and their thematic storyline. I'm in total AWE of not only what winterosy says but also the editing.

Do yourself a favor and check it out if you're curious abt LSF or if you're a casual fan of theirs or just of girl groups in general. Winterosy gets to the point of why this group is among the top 4th gen girl groups and, chances are, will remain there for (hopefully) a long time.

Huh Yunjin was born in Seoul, SK but moved to the US until her 16th birthday. At which point, her family moved back so that Yunjin could attend an arts school and enter the idol trainee system. She participated in Produce 48, was eliminated, and continued training for a bit longer. Just at the moment when she was considering applying to colleges in the US, she got offered a chance to join HYBE/Source Music's newest girl group Le Sserafim...

In addition to being part of one of 4th gen's biggest girl groups, Yunjin is also making a name for herself as a singer-songwriter. Like the rest of her members, she already had songwriting credits for several songs in Le Sserafim's discography. BUT she's also been steadily releasing solo digital singles that showcase her talent in communicating (and most importantly connecting) with fans. These haven't been random songs that fans have to search for in order to enjoy. Oh, no, all 4 songs (as of time of this post) have had MVs; are available for streaming on Spotify, Apple music, etc; are promoted on all of Le Sserafim's social media. I like seeing this kind of support from her company. It's a good indication that Yunjin will have a good career ahead of her.

The songs

The best way to explain why I'm talking abt her, I feel that listening/watching the following will add more context.

This first song is something she wrote to celebrate her group's first 100 days. It's also a love song abt female friendships. <3

Next up is a song on what being a female idol is like w/r/t to the sexism and misogyny. Two v. important facts: all of the outfits Yunjin wears in the MV are ones she's worn for performances and MVs. Also, she did the artwork for the ENTIRE MV.

Her 3rd entry is a song abt shifting one's perspective when it comes to placing idols so high up that one's own self-esteem takes a tumble. I was WEEPING by the end of the MV cuz wow, what a sweet message to close out the song with.

Finally, her latest song is another introspective tune abt her darker moments while pursuing idol life in Korea.

FTR, Yunjin performed at WeverseCon earlier this year. Here she is doing "I ≠ DOLL" live:

If you want some more in-depth deconstruction of Yunjin's first two songs, allow me to rec this 13-min video from Seoul Connection. I usually enjoy hearing Yetti (the YT reactor) discuss everything from the musical production to the lyrics of the idols she reacts/becomes a fan of. Unfortch for me, the focus of her channel has shifted to idols I'm totally uninterested in, so I'm not subscribed to her channel. However, I'm sure that many folks will enjoy at least a couple of her videos.

This year has been the second year in a row in which girl groups have been dominating the Kpop music landscape. So many great rookies and returning veterans dropping awesome song after awesome song and wowing everyone with fantastic performances.

Everyone has their likes and dislikes. I totes get why some ppl might dismiss girl groups cuz they think their music is fluff (said in a derogatory way). But the truth that no many want to admit is that girl groups keep the Kpop industry going. Despite how some fans and locals tend to discard older groups in favor of rookies.

This video essay from felt2000 focuses on how there have been occasions when companies push their girl groups to the forefront to distract from scandals, make a ton of money off them, and then push them off what's referred to as 'the glass cliff'.

A thoughtful, well-researched, and spanning a lot of different eras and girl groups, this might not be an uplifting video essay. But I still appreciate the starkness and freedom that comes from telling the truth. Because, for me at least, it makes me appreciate girl groups that much more.

glitteryv: (Default)
Loossemble is a 5-member group (comprised of LOONA members) that debuted mid-September of this year. Everything from their sound to the promo rollout to (most importantly) the connection to LOONA had literally made me a fan.

I sort of mentioned it on my post abt Chuu, but I'm gonna go a smidgen more into detail. So, after all of the LOONA members were FREED FROM BBC'S CLUTCHES (huzzah!), all of the members ended up signing with different agencies. There's Chuu and Yves who are soloists, Odd Eye Circle (a trio), ARTMS (another quintent), and Loossemble. Which, like, in another time or another world, it would've meant the end of LOONA.

BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE HERE!

Instead of moving on from LOONA, all of the members still consider themselves as part of LOONA. They've been referencing (to the point of adding new) bits of LOONA lore. Granted, I don't know much abt it, but I've seen enough to make the connections. Also, all of the members have attended each other's concerts, performed each other's songs, etc. In Loossemble's case, frex, the first song on their self-titled EP is called "Intro: Searching for their friends." Technically speaking, Loossemble IS a portmanteau of LOONA and Assemble so...there's that. :DDDD

Their lead single "Sensitive" is a song abt forging your own path by trusting your instincts. It's a BOP and then some:

I really like all the moon-related imagery, the Easter eggs of the number 12 (the number of LOONA members), and the entirety of the MV's scene--which not only is movie-like but also dreamy and tender IN SPACE. (As I understand it, Vivi (the woman in black) is an android in the LOONA lore, frex.) Also, yes, there ARE 12 sleep pods. I just, wow, there's budget PLUS a fantastic storyline!!!

fifizappa is one of my fave YouTube reaction channels. They (I don't know fifizappa's pronouns) tend to focus a ton on production and are, imo, one of the few reactors who will give balanced opinions. Unlike reactors who LOVE everything. Anyways, I often feel like I'm not good enough at expressing my opinions on music, so I'm linking to fifizappa's commentary abt this song as my thoughts and impressions on "Sensitive" as well as Loossemble do align with theirs.

BILLLIE is a 7-member group that debuted in early November of 2021. I gotta admit that they didn't catch my eye until abt a year later. Which I think happened cuz Spotify had included "Ring X Ring" (their debut song) on a playlist.

FTR, I wasn't impressed. If anything, I remember thinking 'well, that's a song' before permanently hiding it from rotation. This is an opinion that I have to this day. Some months later, their song "GingaMingaYo" started blowing up and I listened. Repeatedly.

Fast-forward all the way to late March of this year. They drop their song "EUNOIA" and I end up watching the MV with this kind of face: 😍😍😍, heheh. This would mark the hot-and-cold thing I have when it comes to this group. Sometimes, I really love their songs while others I avoid them like whoa. Although I'm not a Bellie've (their fandom name), I do approach every single release from this group with as few expectations as possible. Thankfully, I've enjoyed more of the discography than not, so I'm calling it a win. I also feel they're a truly versatile group. So creative too! There is some v. intricate lore for those who are interested in such things.

In some ways, I feel this group's discography (IHNI abt any other content they have, though I imagine there's something out there) is one that rewards listeners who want something outside of the same old, same old. ;)

EUNOIA is an excellent intro to BILLIE as a group because (both in terms of song and MV) it does showcases the high talent levels when it comes to vocals and choreo. Also the members are hella charming AND the melody is perfection.

The dance practice is super fun to watch since the members are wearing different sports gear. ^__^

My fave music show performance.

Trigger warnings: Korean music show camerawork (lots of zooming in and out, tilting, etc), graphics-heavy background screen, lots of bright lights, and fans (happily) scream-singing along.

It's Live performance

Throwing in this extra bit in case anyone would like to enjoy the song w/o all of the goings on from the performance above. I also like the musical arrangements in this version (w/r/t the beats, etc.)

glitteryv: (Default)
aespa is a 4-member girl group from SM Entertainment that debuted back in 2020. Let me be frank and say that I didn't like "Black Mamba" (their debut song) or "Next Level" (their breakthrough hit.) It didn't help that there were points where that song was EVERYWHERE. So I waved good-bye to aespa and moved on.

Fast forward to late spring this year. I'm listening to one of those daily Spotify playlists that change its tracklist daily. A song comes on and I go WHO IS THAT? Imagine how shocked I was when I saw it was aespa's "Welcome to MY World"! XD This was a full 180 departure (per what I knew of the group's discography) from anything I'd heard from them.

FWIW, I legit don't know what's going other that it continues the aespa KWANGYA (sp?) storyline thing. [Additional context: there's an overall concept of aespa being comprised of 4 human members and 4 computer avatars and some other stuff I legit never kept track of.] ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

MOVING ON.

This is my fave performance. Since the song has such a slow beat, I wasn't expecting choreo. Seeing all of the MYs (aespa fandom) waving the lightsticks was a neat touch, NGL.

After enjoying "Welcome to MY World", "Spicy", and "Better Things", I was v. curious abt aespa's upcoming cb for their new mini titled Drama

Trigger warnings: Car crash from 0:33 to 0:37 AND 3:30 to 3:33; people fighting with swords; implied people died by swordfighting; lots of light effects meant to mimic car lights; fast edits; from 2:11 to 2:18, someone is dropped from a building.

There isn't a single thing I don't like abt this song: the music production, the rapping (it's not great, but aespa's not known for rapping?), the fits and sets, the homages to v. popular movies, the singing. THE SINGING, Y'ALL!! If there's something that SM Entertainment is known for is HAVING SINGERS WHO SING FOR REALSIES. And, well, okay, I might be super wrong abt this, but I feel that this song REALLY showcases every member's singing talents equally. I'm also super charmed by the vocal fry that enhances the singling out of the last repetition of the word 'drama' in the chorus. OH, AND THERE'S A BRIDGE IN A K-POP SONG IN 2023? 🤯🤯🤯

If you want a sightly more technical review, let me include this video from the JG Channel.

FWIW, I do disagree with their criticisms abt aespa's rapping in this song. It legit wasn't bad (or maybe I've heard worse?). In any case, I do respect their insights as two dudes who work in the K-Pop business.

Let's say you're intrigued abt the "Drama" lore...If so, it's time to check out these two videos from one of my fave channels: Bookish Theories. They have a LOT of such kind of videos covering aespa, the entirety of BTS music videos, Red Velvet, TXT, etc.

Explanation of all 4 "Drama" teasers:

Explanation of the MV itself:

Fave Performance 1

Trigger warnings: Flashing lights, pyrotechnics, Korean music show cameraworks (zooming in and out, some shaky-cam), the crowd is doing a loud fanchant.

Fave Performance 2

Trigger Warnings: Intense background graphics, extremely dynamic camerawork (tilting, zooming in/out, shaky-cam), v. bright lights. This one is an even more vibrant version of the performance. It might make some folks dizzy.

The funny thing is that, after liking this song so much, I went back and listened to all of aespa's discography. Only to discover that I only enjoy 2023 (and onwards, I guess) aespa. XD

STAYC (their name is an acronym for Star To A Young Culture) is a 6-member girl group that debuted back in 2020. I knew of them because of a random YouTube docu (that I think you can only watch on YT Premium?) called K-Pop Evolution.

Each hourlong episode covered an aspect of K-Pop: its origin, the first idols, the globalization of K-Pop, Fandoms, Trainee Life, how K-Pop MVs get made, and how trainees end up debuting as a group. FWIW, although I do think they went a bit too heavy with mentioning BTS (they don't appear in the docu per se; only clips from concerts do), it's a good starter pack for folks who might be curious abt that whole world.

In any case, there was that one episode that focused on how an agency chooses trainees from its roster. It's partly told from the trainees' POV (there are many scenes of them practicing in order to make the cut; their dorms; short interviews with some of the trainees) AND the other half is told from the execs' POV (the SRS BIZNESS meetings where the producers and directors assess each trainee; the planning that goes on given that they have an actual deadline to prepare a group for debut.) There's some drama (some of it due to Year 1 of Panini) too. At the end, 6 trainees go thru the final elimination and STAYC is born.

Musically-speaking, STAYC's "thing" is cute and upbeat music. Their songs are meant to shake you out of a bad/sad mood. There was one attempt to move past that image via a late July 2022 title track called "Beautiful Monster" that was a bit of a 180 turn. The song itself is fine? But, even though the members were v. excited abt it, fans didn't vibe with it. IMO, I think it was a matter of the song being somewhat too mature (both in terms of mood and melody) for a group of mostly older teens (3 out of the 6 members were under 20 y.o. and the oldest member was 21 at the time.)

So STAYC decided to go back to the bright and adorable concepts that are, LBR here, their wheelhouse. NO ONE DOES THAT CONCEPT AS WELL AS STAYC DOES. #IT'S A FACT

Their latest song is called "Bubble". Despite the loopy MV, the lyrics are pretty good (like most of STAYC songs are, actually. There is a lot of thoughtfulness under all that fluff.) The members sing abt how awesome it is to be weird. There's this one line ("I'm one of a kind and I like it this way") that I like (and I can imagine being v. comforting to many.) It's also pretty neat how they equate other folks' negative criticisms as 'bubbles' that they (STAYC) choose to pop cuz they don't have time for that, heheh.

The MV

Trigger warnings: Plenty of visual f/x from beginning to end

Dance Practice

Fave live performance

Trigger warning: V. INTENSE BACKGROUND GRAPHICS, typical K-Pop show camerawork that includes a lot of tilting and zooming in/out, flashing stage lights, and the crowd is singing-yelling (fanchanting).

glitteryv: (Default)
It was late February 2022 and I sat down to watch an MV that a ton of folks were talking abt.

Let me go ahead and link the MV first...

Trigger warning: Lots of visual f/x, the camera moves around too (but not in a shaky-cam style).

I do remember being extremely confused abt both the song AND the video. It was the first time I'd come across a debut that was so OTT. The thing that gave me the most trouble (back in 2022) was that my brain was unable to find stable ground during that first listen. Every time I thought "okay, this is the song then...", IT WOULD SWITCH UP TO SOMETHING SUPER RANDOM. The MV was no better. The flipping from pirate-y dystopia to vibrant setting and then to a moody paranormal (peep the floating cars) was A FUCKING LOT. XD

I'll own up to getting v. close to HAAAAAAAAAAAAAATING the hell of this song. IMO (back then) it was messy and noise-y in a way I was not into AT ALL.

FWIW, I wasn't alone in my dislike. "O.O" was a HELLA DIVISIVE song. A big point of contention was the fact that Coca-Cola had sponsored the song...which is hypocritical of other fandoms to criticize since there have always been MVs in which the groups are promoting something. Hell, even my NewJeans girls' "ETA" MV is, in many ways, a long iPhone ad. IJS.

On top of all that, there were fairly valid accusations of plagiarism:

* MYs (aespa fandom) accused NMIXX of using the same font as aespa's for their logo.

* Orbit (LOONA fandom) accused JYPE (NMIXX's agency) of copying shots for NMIXX's debut teasers (which began airing late January 2022) as the ones from LOONA's MV teaser that dropped mid-October 2021.

* ATINYs (ATEEZ fandom) had, imo, the worthier claims. Several scenes from "O.O" are c&p from ATEEZ's "Illusion" MV (which had premiered 3 yrs earlier). There are parts of NMIXX's choreo that are pretty close to the one ATEEZ did. DDDDDDD:

AFAIK, JYPE never addressed the accusations. There was also some confusion because of production companies working for both ATEEZ and NMIXX (at different times.) Per what I saw, a lot of ppl did focused on complaining to JYPE (since there's a process for MV production (including storyboarding)). Sadly, many other ppl used the plagiarism accusations as a way to dunk on NMIXX themselves. Even though, realistically, they had ZERO say on anything regarding the teasers and the MV. They were debuting, for goodness' sake. So they had no way to pull rank/try to change things a little.

ANYWAYS, even though I wasn't a fan of their music, I deffo gave many gold stars to NMIXX for weathering the storm the best way they could: by going ahead with performing "O.O" and the rest of their music every chance they got.

Eventually, ppl calmed the fuck down.

Let's jump ahead to August of this year. YouTube suggests that darn "O.O" MV and I said "hell, why not? It's been over a year. Maybe I've mellowed out some."

This time? I FREAKING LURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRVE EVERYTHING ABT IT: the switch-ups, the vibez, the choreo, even the lyrics! TBH, I don't know WHY the song worked for me a year and half later. It just did. Which, even better for me, it meant I could go back and catch up with everything NMIXX has dropped. That's a WIN! They also hold the distinction of being the only group from JYPE that I like and listen to.

It's funny cuz I'd sort of made my peace with just enjoying the MV as it was, right? But then I came across Elliot New Village's reaction. He mentioned how the ENTIRE MV IS NMIXX'S CALLING CARD--with jumps between sets, melodies, and concepts because NMIXX is showing that they can do all of those things and do them WELL. And that's why they do dark (at the beginning), bubbly (in the middle), and girlcrush (at the end.)

Ever since I watched that reaction, I've gotten into the habit of watching any new-to-me-channel's reaction to early NMIXX ("O.O", "DICE", "Tank") as a way to gauge whether or not the ppl reacting and I see eye to eye. NGL, most times, ppl do a kinda 'laughing cuz this is WEIRD" reaction (and that's OK with me cuz this video is kinda bizarre the first time around for most ppl). What I do have a problem with is with folks who mock it.

ANYWAYS, after much grousing abt MIXXPOP (the style that NMIXX uses--which includes quick switch-ups), NMIXX's latter releases have moved away into something more mainstream. Of course, now the same folks are mourning the lack of MIXXPOP in NMIXX songs. #SIGH

Performance MV

Trigger warning: the camera moves around all the time. NOT in a shaky-cam style, btw. However, it might make some folks queasy?

One of the things that has made that video have a high rewatch value is the blur effect that happens at during the first and last minutes. (Every time the camera does a close up, everything on the sides gets blurry).

Fave Live Performance

Trigger warning: lots of flashing lights, quick camera movements.

BTW, I chose to have this video start with "O.O". If you want to watch the other 2 songs ("DICE" and "Cool"), you just gotta rewind a little. ;)

Gonna kick off my YAYS TO K-POP GIRL GROUPS with Chuu's "Howl". This is a song that's left me rolling all over my FEEEEEEEEEEEEEELS every. single. time. I've listened to it.

But, in order to explain why I love it so much, I first need to add some much needed context. I've tried to summarize things as best as I can. However, I'm (at best) a casual LOONA listener, so feel free to correct me if I've gotten a detail or two wrong. :D?

2018

* August - Chuu debuts alongside 11 other young women in Blockberry Creative (or BBC for short)'s newest girl group called LOONA. They do fine in Korea, are possibly a smidgen more popular internationally.

2021

* September - Reports pop up stating that BBC is in financial trouble. As they own a ton of money to their own staff (!) as well as outside contractors (such as MUAs, hairstylists, choreographers, etc). It's estimated that the total amount can be up to $1-1.5M US.

* Late fall - News mention that Chuu has filed some paperwork with the courts regarding her contract (PUT A PIN ON THIS)

2022

* January - Having somehow navigated the debt from the previous year, BBC announces that LOONA will have a 2-day concert in Seoul. This is a big deal cuz it's their first in-person concert in 3 years (due to Panini.) And they also drop that Chuu won't be participating in the concerts due to health reasons. Per what I remember, she showed up at some point but didn't perform? IDEK, y'all.

* Late March - It's reported that Chuu has filed to break her contract with BBC. That said, she's still participating in certain things including the survival show Queendom alongside LOONA.

* Late May - BBC announces that LOONA will be doing their first world tour (yays). Then, 20 MINUTES BEFORE THE TICKETS GO ON SALE, BBC tells folks that Chuu won't be participating in the ENTIRE tour cuz of "scheduling conflicts"--which, um, what???

* October - Chuu appears in an episode of Dr. Oh's Golden Clinic. This is a show lead by a female psychiatrist called Dr. Oh Eun Young in which she counsels ppl who talk to her abt their problems.

Among the many things abt Chuu's episode (including her breaking down in tears), three things stood out as WTF:

1. Training (from pre-debut onwards) has been so grueling that there had been times in which members only get a maximum of 20 mins to go outside and get some fresh air. Sometimes, they don't get any free time at all. This, obvs, has taken a toll on Chuu's mental health.

2. Chuu is v. frank abt her ED but I'm choosing not to go into detail here.

3. (Again, remember this episode aired in October 2022) Chuu mentions that she's yet to get paid for the ENTIRETY of 2021. o__O?!

Ppl are, ofc, pissed off and demand BBC to do something abt this.

* Nov. 25 - BBC releases a notif abt Chuu getting kicked out LOONA basically due to her being a "bad" person.

RECORD SCRATCH MOMENT CUZ WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK?!

This (rightfully) pissed off Orbit (LOONA fandom). Things get even more heated three days later when Chuu herself posts on her Insta that she's not sure of what's happening but that she thanks folks for their support and trust. This is followed by fellow LOONA member Hyunjin going on an app (or maybe it was a fancafe? I truly don't remember where I saw this) saying that her head and heart hurt. She also mentioned being v. angry (at the situation.)

By then, all but 2 of the members had filed to break their contracts too!

IIRC, Orbit began a dual hashtag campaign ( #IStandWithChuu and #JusticeForChuu) that became extremely popular. To the point hat there's this massive outpouring of support for Chuu from Korean celebs and folks from behind-the-scenes (photographers, producers, etc) in the form of social media posts stating how sweet Chuu is and include either (usually both) of the hashtags

* December - For some weird-ass reason, BBC decided to announce LOONA's upcoming album. NO idea why they thought this would go over well? (SPOILER: It didn't.)

Orbit started to put pressure on BBC via boycotting the upcoming album AND spreading the word to NOT buy anything LOONA related + avoid streaming LOONA music. Then this spread to other fandoms. It was a really neat to see (considering how...contentious all K-Pop fandoms can be. Every so often we all get it right.)

ANYWAYS, by the end of the month, BBC announced the cancellation of the upcoming album. BUT THINGS HAD JUST STARTED.

2023

* August - EVERY SINGLE LOONA MEMBER IS FREE FROM THEIR CURSED CONTRACT WITH BBC!!! HOOORAYYYYYYY! (this was a lengthy and delicate process. Some members had to appeal the initial rulings, etc.)

As a bonus, LOONA members were granted the right to use the LOONA name for their activities. Oh, and some of the members are able to perform LOONA songs w/o incurring in any penalties (though this has to do with the agency they're signed to and other stuff regarding legalities, etc.)

Now, according to the members themselves, LOONA HAS NOT DISBANDED. It's just that things are, well, complicated. Everyone's signed to different agencies. Though, fwiw, there's a steadying idea that everything they do is connected to the LOONA lore at large.

Regarding BBC, well, once LOONA was free from their clutches, they had one (1) female artist who also left the company. #DESERVED

(Oof, that wasn't much of a summary, was it?) /o\

ANYWAYS, fast forward to October 2023 in which Chuu debuts under her new agency. My fave song (and the one that inspired this whole post) is "Howl".

The first time I watched this video (I don't think it even had captions on), I was incredibly moved. It was so great to see Chuu smiling, enjoying the sun, and reuniting with her friends.

WHEN I READ THE LYRICS, THO? I was a mess of tears. The song is abt Chuu having had to build walls around herself/put on a mask in order to protect herself while going thru a v. dark moment. As the song progresses, she realizes that her friend had her back and that, as two ppl with scars, the best thing they can do for each other is be each other's heroes. There's this line "Even if God turns his back on me, you're there". ;______;

I was already in the K-Pop fandom when the sleazy news abt BBC started to appear. And I deffo remember keeping an eye on the LOONA stuff. So, at least for me, seeing Chuu (as well as the rest of the LOONA members) come out the other side and be free to do what they want do (PLUS GET PAID) deffo adds a layer of emotion to this song.

She did a showcase for her new mini (also titled "Howl") and talked abt the support from her fans and the other members while she worked on the album.

Here she is performing the song live

She also has her official YT channel and another channel called Chuu Can Do It that's got to do some stuff with environmental stuff.

FWIW, I'm not quite done talking abt LOONA as I'm sure there will be another mention in a near future post. ;)

STAN LOONA! (hahah, pardon the cheesy moment.)

Hahah, here I am all shiny-eyed and bushy-tailed to talk abt a v. specific video that anyone who is at the crossroads of K-Pop and fan of dancing will most probably enjoy as well!

So "Facts in Fiction" is a fairly new YouTube channel that does technical-yet-interesting breakdowns of idols' dancing. The video linked below caught my eye cuz I'd been wondering what kind of rankings would the boygroups at HYBE would get if one was to take a SRS BIZNESS approach. It's worth nothing that this video was posted in early April 2023, so Boynextdoor is not included in the list (as they hadn't even debuted yet.) And neither is SEVENTEEN. This also makes sense as SVT's dancing is on a whole 'nother level (and that's something that even I, an ARMY, can deffo admit to.) FWIW, there this other video that touches on SVT's technique, etc in case you're wondering what does the person running this channel (who is obviously involved in the dancing community) has to say abt them.

Let's say you're interested in other groups. Well, the channel also has dance analysis videos for NewJeans, aespa, Red Velvet, blackpink, Twice, ITZY, EXO, and ZEROBASEONE.

Back to this video, though.

One of the reasons I'm reccing this is that OP's approach to every person mention starts from a point of compassion and respect. So, everyone gets praised for the things they're good at/have improved on circa debut. And that's followed by actually constructive criticism on the technique (such as why certain habits might lead to sprains or worse due to the pressure on the leg/foot/muscles.)

Now, as for the ranking themselves...I do agree with all of them except for the 10 and 11 positions. IMO, they should've been reversed cuz the guy ranked as no.11 does have a smidgen more talent (IMO) than no.10. It's not a dealbreaker and yet, every time I've rewatched this video, I tend to pull a bit of a Muppet Face when no.11 is presented, hahah.

Anyways, it's a longer-than-expected video (clocking a little over 46 mins.) but the list does include 19 ppl total.

Here you go:

V being the guest in Suchwita episode 18 completed BTS' individual members' appearing in the show. There were a ton of high expectations. Not only because V (like most of the members) didn't do a ton of in-person interviews (off the top of my head, I can only think of 2 Japanese shows and 1 episode of Yoo Quiz) during the Layover promo cycle. Just like the rest of the members, his involvement in the entirety of his first solo project was deep; so much of it was a good representation of what V sees as great ways to connect with ARMYs and any future/casual fans as well (see V-icnic, his fangsign event; inviting ppl (while in disguise) to see him sing; and v. few appearances in Korean web shows.)

Suchwita was an excellent platform for him. Not only because of his friendship/bond with Yoongi would put him at ease, but because everything abt that show invites some degree of self-reflection and personal insight.

The thing abt V is that he's the kind of person who has a v. unique way of moving thru life. Or, better said, he's a loveable weirdo who also happens to be TREMENDOUSLY handsome, LOL. However, by sitting down with Yoongi, he could let go and be as candid as he felt comfortable with. Secure in the knowledge that his hyung wouldn't trip him up or push him in uncomfortable ways.

This results in an episode in which V and SUGA discuss the 2018 burnout; V's process when it came to working on the album (including why he chose to work with songs others had written for him); the general vibe of the entire album; his friendship/dynamic/bond with Yoongi as well as with the rest of BTS, etc.

There's also a LOT of hilarity cuz, if there's one thing that Yoongi does when it comes to interacting with the maknae line is BE HELLA CLOWNING with them. The way he's so terribly indulgent with Jimin, Jungkook, but especially V always leaves me feeling a ton of emotions as well as quite light-hearted.

Unrelated to the episode, here's a lovely performance of "For You"

And now, my posts abt Suchwita hit pause once again! That said, the Fannish 50 (with a few of them being BTS-centric) will continue. :DDDD

Trigger Warning: There's a lot of diet talk (within the context of being an K-pop idol) throughout this episode. None of it is presented as a negative, but as a fact of K-pop life. That said, I am aware how this might be uncomfortable or even trigger to some folks. Hence the heads' up.

Episode 15 of Suchwita turned out to be as wild as the previews had made it look like. Filmed two days after the D-Day Tour June 25th concert and airing a little over a month later, Jungkook's guest appearance was an exercise in unintentional charm.

Showing up as part of the promo for "SEVEN", his first solo single, Jungkook talked a little, ate a lot (for serious!), and had a grand old time spending time with his Yoongi hyung. And then, there was the singing, heheh.

FTR, the conversation was pretty solid (as expected from this show. Yoongi does his research and, by now, is a pretty seasoned host). I liked seeing Jungkook talk abt being an idol with a 10+ career, the back-and-forth Yoongi and Jungkook had when it came to JK being the group's maknae (youngest) and how that shaped so much of his personality and behavior in life, everything that happened w/r/t Jungkook singing at the 2022 World Cup, and general goofiness. It was such a joy to see Yoongi slip into his old man persona... even though he's only 3 or so years older than Jungkook.

I also really liked that Yoongi understands who Jungkook is (probably down to the molecular level) and so, for the first time ever in the history of the show, he set up a norebang for Jungkook. If only so Jungkook could sing to his heart's content. This meant that we got a prophecy (of sorts) fulfilled: Jungkook and Yoongi performed "That That" together. Shortly after that, Yoongi ended the show...but Jungkook stayed and sang some more, LOL.

(Like, at some point, Yoongi leaves and returns in his street clothes, laughs at Jungkook's rendition of "Daechwita", and leaves again.)

In any case, this ended up being the longest Suchwita episode so far. Clocking at 39 mins and change for the actual!episode with another 15-min and change segment of Jungkook singing to his heart's content.

ETA: there's an ongoing conversation abt ideal bodies (including dieting as an idol) during the first half of the episode. Adding a soft warning for topics that some folks might find triggery.

Just like with Jin's episode, Hobi's appearance in Suchwita was filmed back in Feb 17, 2023 (or, roughly, a day before Hobi's actual birthday). But, per Hobi's request, it didn't air until July 19, 2023 (or abt 3 months and change after he enlisted.)

This time, Hobi wasn't quite promoting "On The Street" (his collabo with J.Cole)--though he did talked a little abt it.

Instead, the episode was an exploration of Hobi's own history, pre-debut to early post-debut BTS' lives, being the first member to launch a solo album (and do an amazing solo concert that I wrote abt on this post), etc.

There was, as expected, a LOT OF GIGGLING happening from both Hobi and SUGA as well as some good observations on the idol industry and how they both see themselves AND BTS within that world.

One thing that's mentioned but not super delved into is how close to BTS and Big Hit were close to get dissolved. From Sope's perspective is a moment they reminisce abt being told the group had to move out of their dorms cuz the company had run out of money. Rapline stayed put out of, I guess, stubborness. Bang PD was able to raise some additional funds and BTS lived to deliver the true breakthrough of their rookie era: I NEED U.

Fun fact abt that: An investing firm gave BH ₩4 billion (or around $3.6 million US) and held 30% of BH. Which is how BTS was able to try for one last time to reach for actual success. By the time the firm sold the stakes back to BH, the firm had made ₩108 billion (or around $75 million US.)

After the episode's over, we get a LOLARIOUS teaser for the next BTS member to appear (Jungkook) that feels extremely chaotic. :DDDD
