It was late February 2022 and I sat down to watch an MV that a ton of folks were talking abt.

Let me go ahead and link the MV first...

Trigger warning: Lots of visual f/x, the camera moves around too (but not in a shaky-cam style).

I do remember being extremely confused abt both the song AND the video. It was the first time I'd come across a debut that was so OTT. The thing that gave me the most trouble (back in 2022) was that my brain was unable to find stable ground during that first listen. Every time I thought "okay, this is the song then...", IT WOULD SWITCH UP TO SOMETHING SUPER RANDOM. The MV was no better. The flipping from pirate-y dystopia to vibrant setting and then to a moody paranormal (peep the floating cars) was A FUCKING LOT. XD

I'll own up to getting v. close to HAAAAAAAAAAAAAATING the hell of this song. IMO (back then) it was messy and noise-y in a way I was not into AT ALL.

FWIW, I wasn't alone in my dislike. "O.O" was a HELLA DIVISIVE song. A big point of contention was the fact that Coca-Cola had sponsored the song...which is hypocritical of other fandoms to criticize since there have always been MVs in which the groups are promoting something. Hell, even my NewJeans girls' "ETA" MV is, in many ways, a long iPhone ad. IJS.

On top of all that, there were fairly valid accusations of plagiarism:

* MYs (aespa fandom) accused NMIXX of using the same font as aespa's for their logo.

* Orbit (LOONA fandom) accused JYPE (NMIXX's agency) of copying shots for NMIXX's debut teasers (which began airing late January 2022) as the ones from LOONA's MV teaser that dropped mid-October 2021.

* ATINYs (ATEEZ fandom) had, imo, the worthier claims. Several scenes from "O.O" are c&p from ATEEZ's "Illusion" MV (which had premiered 3 yrs earlier). There are parts of NMIXX's choreo that are pretty close to the one ATEEZ did. DDDDDDD:

AFAIK, JYPE never addressed the accusations. There was also some confusion because of production companies working for both ATEEZ and NMIXX (at different times.) Per what I saw, a lot of ppl did focused on complaining to JYPE (since there's a process for MV production (including storyboarding)). Sadly, many other ppl used the plagiarism accusations as a way to dunk on NMIXX themselves. Even though, realistically, they had ZERO say on anything regarding the teasers and the MV. They were debuting, for goodness' sake. So they had no way to pull rank/try to change things a little.

ANYWAYS, even though I wasn't a fan of their music, I deffo gave many gold stars to NMIXX for weathering the storm the best way they could: by going ahead with performing "O.O" and the rest of their music every chance they got.

Eventually, ppl calmed the fuck down.

Let's jump ahead to August of this year. YouTube suggests that darn "O.O" MV and I said "hell, why not? It's been over a year. Maybe I've mellowed out some."

This time? I FREAKING LURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRVE EVERYTHING ABT IT: the switch-ups, the vibez, the choreo, even the lyrics! TBH, I don't know WHY the song worked for me a year and half later. It just did. Which, even better for me, it meant I could go back and catch up with everything NMIXX has dropped. That's a WIN! They also hold the distinction of being the only group from JYPE that I like and listen to.

It's funny cuz I'd sort of made my peace with just enjoying the MV as it was, right? But then I came across Elliot New Village's reaction. He mentioned how the ENTIRE MV IS NMIXX'S CALLING CARD--with jumps between sets, melodies, and concepts because NMIXX is showing that they can do all of those things and do them WELL. And that's why they do dark (at the beginning), bubbly (in the middle), and girlcrush (at the end.)

Ever since I watched that reaction, I've gotten into the habit of watching any new-to-me-channel's reaction to early NMIXX ("O.O", "DICE", "Tank") as a way to gauge whether or not the ppl reacting and I see eye to eye. NGL, most times, ppl do a kinda 'laughing cuz this is WEIRD" reaction (and that's OK with me cuz this video is kinda bizarre the first time around for most ppl). What I do have a problem with is with folks who mock it.

ANYWAYS, after much grousing abt MIXXPOP (the style that NMIXX uses--which includes quick switch-ups), NMIXX's latter releases have moved away into something more mainstream. Of course, now the same folks are mourning the lack of MIXXPOP in NMIXX songs. #SIGH

Dance Practice

Performance MV

Trigger warning: the camera moves around all the time. NOT in a shaky-cam style, btw. However, it might make some folks queasy?

One of the things that has made that video have a high rewatch value is the blur effect that happens at during the first and last minutes. (Every time the camera does a close up, everything on the sides gets blurry).

Fave Live Performance

Trigger warning: lots of flashing lights, quick camera movements.

BTW, I chose to have this video start with "O.O". If you want to watch the other 2 songs ("DICE" and "Cool"), you just gotta rewind a little. ;)
