Today's post is a 2-for-1 that closes out the GIRL GROUPS ARE AWESOME portion of this posting series. :D
First up is this 35-min exploration of fromis_9's discography. I've been in K-pop long enough to see a lot of newer (2021-onwards) folks be weirdly dismissive of this girl group. Granted, even Pledis and HYBE (their immediate agencies) seem (most of the time) reluctant to allocate resources for this 8 (initially 9) girl group. Which is a shame because they are (just like most (if not all) idols) hella talented and charismatic. They also have a really good music trajectory that's peaked (as of time of this post) with the AWESOMECAKIEST (NON-BTS) ALBUM OF THE YEAR: Unlock My World. A true masterpiece, zero skips type of an album. This is, to me, an even better album than my beloved NewJeans' AND Le Sserafim's music releases this year. The level of sophistication and just 'let me sink in to this song cuz wow' that fromis_9 has achieved with Unlock My world should've been enough for it to be a more popular output. Alas.
At least they're having a 2-day concert next month.
ANYWAYS, winterosy's video came out January 2022, so it doesn't include his analysis of 2023's Album of the Year. HOWEVER, it's a really good dive into WHY ppl who like girl groups, great songs, meaningful lyrics, and a sense of fun SHOULD give fromis_9 a try.
And now for a CELEBRATION!
Yes, this is another video essay from winterosy, LOL. What can I say? The dude is hella creative when it comes to K-Pop video essays! ANYWAYS, here's a 21-minute video on girl groups, why their music is worth listening to, and a bit of the girl group musical journey. Although it does lean a tad heavily on 4th gen ggs (which he himself admits in the video), there are deffo shoutouts to other generations. I also really like that he is showing the VARIETY of gg music that exists within K-Pop. It's not only cute and bubbly or girl crush.
*Raises her cup of coffee to toast ggs*
