As if I could ever overlook The BOYZ (TBZ for short) for a dance practice theme. XD

ANYWAYS, let me start with a bit of a story time...

"Luckily" for me, I do have receipts of this whole adventure (via DMs. Ah, technology.) The starting point was early September 2020. I'd linked a tweet to a friend and had attached the following comment was "I don't know who these dudes are, but I am digging the aesthetic". For the curious, it was a promo for "The Stealer" MV. IDEK.

Time rolled on (as it does). TBZ kept popping up, but it didn't occur to me to check their music out. NO idea why. In any case, fast-forward to early March 2022 when I watched the "Maverick" MV. My comment to my friend was "oh, I liked this" and left it at that. ยฏ\_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

Because my entry point to Kpop was via MVs, it remains the fastest way for me to determine whether I like or dislike a song/artist/group. Usually, what I like (even at a casual level) I do continue to enjoy (and the opposite thing is also true for songs/artists/groups I don't click with.) One night in mid-November, while in the chaos of trying to catch up with abt 20 or so new and new-to-me MVs, I ended up accidentally adding (yup, you guessed it) the gorram "Maverick" MV. Only to, this time, go full ๐Ÿคฉ abt everything! FWIW, I truly can't say why the MV made such an impression almost 10 months later. Timing is such a mercurial concept, you know?

This is v. early days in the TBZ waters for me (obvs), but every aspect of "Maverick"--from MV to dance practice to performances--have strengthened my resolve to find a place in the fandom. I'm calling that a win. :P

Once again, I'll start with the gorram music video (hahah)

BEFORE I CAN EVEN BEGIN TO THINK OF LINKING IT, I GOTTA THROW IN THE TRIGGER AND CONTENT WARNINGS:

Although some might think it's an interpretation of Netflix's Squid Game, this MV is v. much inspired by 2000's Battle Royale movie. The premise of that film is abt a dystopian near-future in which a group of "deliquent" teenagers have to fight to the death until only one is left alive.

Some of the trigger-y things you can expect from this music video: midly implied torture; implied murder; several people with scratches and superficial wounds (primarily on their faces).

Also: shaky cam film style throughout the video; fast cuts meant to be disorienting; lots of flashing lights. Additional warning to the segment starting at 2:49 and going thru 3:11. The flashing lights go to such an intense level that it might leave you dizzy. I'm not joking. It was A LOT.

I love this song so much! It kicks off at a high-point and remains there except for 1 or 2 moments when you're able to catch your breath. From a lyrical angle, I see it as a song abt standing out even if makes (general) you seem like the odd one out. To keep on your path because being true to yourself is worth it in the long run. YMMV, etc.

Now, there are 2 dance practices: one with a moving camera and one that has a fixed camera. I chose the latter cuz the former gave me a bit of motion sickness (as my eyes were trying to pay attention to what the guys were doing WHILE the camera swayed and zoomed. It was too much for me.) Here's a link to that OTHER VERSION in case you're interested.

IMHO, TBZ is a top-tier group when it comes to dancing. For this song, they favor an easy-flowing formation with tons of quick posturing. NGL, I'm quite neutral abt that style of dancing...EXCEPT that it actually works quite nicely in this intance. One thing that helps is how well-lit this studio is so that, even though there are several members dressed all in black, you can follow the lines without much difficulty.

EVERYONE is doing the most, keeping the energy as high as they possibly can while shifting every which way. It's impressive. ALSO, the ending is pretty cute and lulzy. I really appreciate seeing idols react like regular human beings; that much dancing would leave me feeling drained too. :P

And, here is my fave of the "Maverick" performances. TW/CW for a lot of lights and swoop-y camera angles. PLUS there's this kinda corny 1-minute intro that's mimicking the mv. It's ridic, but there we are.

Because I'm a sap, one of the reasons this is my fave one (out of the many they did while promoting this song) is Sangyeon's ending fairy. So sweet! :D

The BOYZ will have at least one more post before this month is over. Wheeee! >:)

EVERGLOW is, hands down, my fave girl group everrrrrrrrr. They can sing, they've got the visuals, and wow can they dance!

"First" dropped back in May of 2021 and instantly became a classic. A shiny gem in EVERGLOW's already flawless discography. Like, in all seriousness, it'd take you all of eternity to find one bad song in any of their albums. Anyways, going back to "First", it not only has an amazing beat, but the lyrics are (like most of EVERGLOW's songs) empowering without being cheesy (if that makes sense).

The song touches on themes of not giving into bad or negative thoughts. EVERGLOW sings to the listener that, together, they will make it thru any dark moment and towards something that's better. It doesn't matter if you're all the way at the end of the long line of ppl, the members will cheer you on every step of the way. And, like, ngl, that's a good message to connect to. Especially in this darkest of timelines, IJS.

Gonna flip things around and start with the official MV. Which is rightfully epic and eye-poppingly good. TALK ABT TREMENDOUSLY GOOD PRODUCTION w/r/t the song AND the MV.

Trigger warnings: This is a visual f/x-heavy video. Expect lots of lighting; tons of flashes; quick camera zooms in and out; shaky cam style of filming.

Get ready and enjoy the ride:

And now for the dance practice...

One of the things that made EVERGLOW stand out for me when I first got into Kpop was their dance style. Their choreography team has figured out a way to do a perfect blend of the cute/flirty/(occasionally)sensual dance moves usually associated with girl groups + the bold/powerful/(occasionally) edgy style of boy groups. FTR, I do think this is something more and more girl groups are doing since 2021 or so? But it bears mentioning all the same.

Here's the dance practice for "First":

WHAT ELSE CAN ANYONE DO OTHER THAN START A SLOW-HANDCLAP-TO-STANDING-OVATION??? Like, they never stop moving yet stay synchronized and deliver the full meaning of the song. It's almost 4 minutes of non-stop dancing and I'm here for it! Extra kudos go to Onda (the blonde member) for tying up the entire thing with the most hardcore 30 seconds of dancing I've seen in a long while. Particularly in a girl group. IJS.

For comparison, this is their performance at MCountdown.

Trigger warnings: lots of flashing lights and random camera movements (as per the usual Korean music show-style).

This was early into their promo for the song (see Mia's blue hair is near identical to the color she had in the MV), so they were R-E-A-D-Y to do their thing.

P.S.: EVERGLOW will have at least one more post dedicated to their dancing later this month. :D!

Ahhh, this is so exciting! *clears throat*

OK, OK! So, this month's theme will be dance practices!!! ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿฝ

FTR, I deffo have rhythm/can shimmy with the best of them/am not embarrassed to shake my booty when a good song comes on. THAT SAID, one of the things that got me HOOKED when it came to Kpop was seeing idols' dance practices. Obvs, each of the ones uploaded (and that I'm going to share throughout January) are the best or most polished version regardless of the members being in sweats and wearing no makeup.

Personally, I lean into strong and sharp (with some sprinkling of athleticism if it fits the theme/aesthetic/song) over softer and cute dance styles. The posts will be a mix of boy groups and girl groups (with some groups having multiple entries cuz I feel like it, LOL.)

Gonna kick things off with my BTS dudes (of course) and the SONG THAT LEFT ALL ARMYS LITERALLY @ ______@ IN 2022 (PLUS A BONUS CUZ I'M NICE LIKE THAT.)

Let's get it!

Although I'm not someone who tends to generalize when making statements, I'm close to 100% sure that, when ARMYs heard "Run BTS" playing for the first time, everyone (metaphorically?) threw themselves on the floor cuz of how AMAZING THE SONG WAS.

In some ways, I see it as a mix of past!BTS (meaning the heavy rapline) with the current!BTS (playfully assertive due to their long career). ANYWAYS, no mv was ever made and, despite how popular the song became, they never performed it in music shows. In part cuz it contains a bit of cussing (one of the lines RM says has the word "goddam".) Folks were bummed out. BUT THEN, late summer, one of the members (I wanna say it was Taehyung? I might be wrong, tho) semi-casually mentioned there being a CHOREOGRAPHY for "Run BTS". LE GASP!

One month after the one and only performance of it, they uploaded the dance practice to their YT channel:

WHERE TO BEGIN???

I mean, there's the dancing itself: precise, aggressive, and doing that thing where it tells the story without being too obvious. There's Yoongi wearing his long hair in a half bun (OH, LORDE, SOMEONE PASS ME SOME SMELLING SALTS!). Jimin's sweater is barely there. Everyone is focused. Jin is adorbs (he changes his hands gestures to something v. cute between 3:08 and 3:11) yet careful (such as when the handkerchief he throws ends up landing in the space between his feet and Jungkook's. It's a legit MIRACLE that no one slipped on it, really). IT'S PERFECTION FROM START TO FINISH.

Trigger warnings for the following 3 videos: Lots of flashing lights and lasers. Plenty of intense background graphics on the screens. Also sudden camera movements (zooming in, zooming out, tilting).

Here's the (to date) sole performance during the Concert in Busan last October:

AND, for funsies, this is ANOTHER video of the same performance. Adding a 2nd trigger warning for fans screaming and scream-singing along. So, you know, adjust the volume accordingly.

The reason why I added this video is cuz it's shot far enough we're able to see how well everyone keeps the beat while performing. Also cuz we get the Vmin VMMINING moment at the v. end. Aww!

Now, for a BONUS, here's an AWESOMECAKES video of the rapline performing "Cypher Pt. 3: Killer". This video combines officially streamed footage with what some in-situ fans filmed. Even better: if you select the captions option, you too can read up on the eye-rolling good lyrics. \o/!!! A solid win for everyone. BTS' rapline is, in my extreeeeeeeeeemely humble opinion, fascinating, magical, and unparalleled. The video starts with Yoongi saying "This is my time"...I just... LASJDFOWAEIIFJKVN;KXNVWEIF. See also whenever any of the 3 say "Fuck you, I don't care/You can't control my shit", my brain goes like so: (๏พ‰โ—•ใƒฎโ—•)๏พ‰*:๏ฝฅ๏พŸโœง

ANYHOODLE, this is a great example of what I mean:

I remember crying because the joy I felt while watching this live (via streaming) was so immense. NGL, I still get goosebumps and my heart does soar every single one of the 745225565651545574 times I've rewatched this video. So, you know, I wanted to share that with y'all. :DDDDDD!
