NGL, I listened to this mix A LOT. The playlist was as eclectic as I'd hope it'd be.
The first thing that had me flailing was how the mix followed a mostly-linear (musical) arc in relation to the fic. Some of the songs are introspective and honest while others have that 'fuck off" attitude that Frank had in spades. Two listens in, I began assigning songs to Frank and a few of the characters in this 'verse. So here are some non-spoilery commentary about this wonderful mix. :)
01 Eric Clapton - Classical Gas - A nice bit of guitar instrumental that sets up the mood in a really good way. Like the opening credits of a movie.
02 Blue October - Into The Ocean
Sometimes it feels just like I'm fallin' in the ocean
This is Frank once he wakes up at the hospital, feeling ten kinds of upside-down and lost.
03 B.o.B. ft Hayley Williams - Airplanes (pt 1)
In the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now
Wish right now, wish right now
Frank and Brian. There's this really cool and introspective/nostalgic vibe mixed in with a cold anger throughout. To me, it was all about Frank sitting in Brian's office and their push-pull during the sessions. It became one of the key songs I'd listen to on repeat whenever I was revising the draft and wanted to focus on Frank's anger and where it was coming from.
04 Woodkid - Iron
A soldier on my own, I don't know the way
I'm riding up the heights, of shame
I'm waiting for the call, the hand on the chest
I'm ready for the fight, and fate
Frank at the Christie Institute. He's doing what he's got to do even though he's not particularly happy about it.
05 Noisettes - Don't Give Up
If you want to keep up, can you afford to feel?
Tyler. This is deffo his song down to the rat-at-at beat. He was the one character in the story that totally caught me by surprise because of his optimism mixed in with his smarts and how he became a sort of one-man cheerleading squad for Frank. I truly loved his friendship with Frank.
06 Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Better
Faster
Stronger
Brendon. I mean, sure this was about Frank too, but I kept thinking about the way Brendon brought Bela into Frank's life.
07 Alanis Morissette - Hand in My Pocket
I'm sick but I'm pretty, baby
Frank after he gets home. He's regrouping.
08 Gym Class Heroes - Good Vibrations
(Good good good good vibrations)
She's giving me the excitations
Frank's first impression of Ray. Yes, I know that the song's narrator is talking about some girl. However, there's no way that Ray wouldn't give Frank "the excitations." >:)
09 The Boy Least Likely To - Be Gentle With Me
'Cause my heart gets broken so easily
So just be gentle, be gentle with me
Frank and Ray's first time: the vulnerability and hope, it broke my heart and patched it up every time I listened to it. Also, the "scared of spiders" bit in the song is TOTES fic!Frank. *g*
10 Michael Buble - Fever
Fever, when you hold me tight
Fever in the morning
Fever all through the night
Frank's reaction to Mikeyway...and Mikeyway's attraction to Frank. (OTP, FTW!)
11 AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
Back in the ring to take another swing
The walls start shaking, earth was quaking
My mind was aching, we were making it
This about Ray: what he represents to Frank. It's their song (in a non-romantic way).
12 Butterfly Boucher - Life Is Short
Travelled far to find the start
Yes I am scared and I've been burnt
But life is short
Frank at the end of the fic. It's an optimistic song that's not overtly sappy. The lyrics for this song pinged me hard because they represented, to me, the exact place where Frank was at in his mind, heart and body. ^_^
