EVERGLOW is, hands down, my fave girl group everrrrrrrrr. They can sing, they've got the visuals, and wow can they dance!
"First" dropped back in May of 2021 and instantly became a classic. A shiny gem in EVERGLOW's already flawless discography. Like, in all seriousness, it'd take you all of eternity to find one bad song in any of their albums. Anyways, going back to "First", it not only has an amazing beat, but the lyrics are (like most of EVERGLOW's songs) empowering without being cheesy (if that makes sense).
The song touches on themes of not giving into bad or negative thoughts. EVERGLOW sings to the listener that, together, they will make it thru any dark moment and towards something that's better. It doesn't matter if you're all the way at the end of the long line of ppl, the members will cheer you on every step of the way. And, like, ngl, that's a good message to connect to. Especially in this darkest of timelines, IJS.
Gonna flip things around and start with the official MV. Which is rightfully epic and eye-poppingly good. TALK ABT TREMENDOUSLY GOOD PRODUCTION w/r/t the song AND the MV.
Trigger warnings: This is a visual f/x-heavy video. Expect lots of lighting; tons of flashes; quick camera zooms in and out; shaky cam style of filming.
Get ready and enjoy the ride:
And now for the dance practice...
One of the things that made EVERGLOW stand out for me when I first got into Kpop was their dance style. Their choreography team has figured out a way to do a perfect blend of the cute/flirty/(occasionally)sensual dance moves usually associated with girl groups + the bold/powerful/(occasionally) edgy style of boy groups. FTR, I do think this is something more and more girl groups are doing since 2021 or so? But it bears mentioning all the same.
Here's the dance practice for "First":
WHAT ELSE CAN ANYONE DO OTHER THAN START A SLOW-HANDCLAP-TO-STANDING-OVATION??? Like, they never stop moving yet stay synchronized and deliver the full meaning of the song. It's almost 4 minutes of non-stop dancing and I'm here for it! Extra kudos go to Onda (the blonde member) for tying up the entire thing with the most hardcore 30 seconds of dancing I've seen in a long while. Particularly in a girl group. IJS.
For comparison, this is their performance at MCountdown.
Trigger warnings: lots of flashing lights and random camera movements (as per the usual Korean music show-style).
This was early into their promo for the song (see Mia's blue hair is near identical to the color she had in the MV), so they were R-E-A-D-Y to do their thing.
P.S.: EVERGLOW will have at least one more post dedicated to their dancing later this month. :D!
