First off, we gotta go back to late 2020, i.e. BE era in the BTS timeline. This was a surprise album that was written, composed, and produced by BTS. On the obvious side of things, it's an amalgamation of their thoughts and experiences during Pandemic Year One. In a deeper level, the music also represented a promise from BTS to ARMY that things would get better at some point.

It's a lovely (yet sadly too short) album that showcases BTS' artistry in the most accessible way possible.

Given the global situation at the time, the album promotions took a bit of creativity. In one instance, there was the BE-hind full stories videos. In which we see one-one interviews between the members. It started with Jungkook interviewing Jin, then Jin sitting down with Jimin, followed by the video I'm linking below, Hobi asking Jungkook questions, V interviewing Hobi, Yoongi asking V some questions abt his music, and finally RM and SUGA discussing music.

FTR, I've only watched the episodes twice: once when they first aired in 2020 and abt 3 weeks ago. Both times, there were some that stood out more than other because of the way the conversation veered off this way and that. In the case of Minimoni, aka RM and Jimin, I was fascinated by how much of the convo focused on music production and the creative process.

Fast-forward to earlier this year when, as part of the v. random promo rollout for rpwp (RM's second solo album), he had a new convo with Jimin at RM's house in an episode of MMM Exchange (MiniMoni Music Exchange).

Some of it reminded me of their convo from the BE-hind Full story episode. However, the setting and casualness also pinged my memory back to the time he sat down with John Eun during the Indigo era. In any case, MMM feels more intimate cuz it features Minimoni. I got the sense that RM has finished recalibrating his emotions. This in turn means that he's much more direct abt certain things he'd kept quiet abt before.

Now, the first reason I'm reccing this is cuz it's MINIMONI. It's been MONTHS since they've appeared anywhere together.Secondly, Jimin's excellent at active listening. He communicates with RM in a way that makes it clear how well he knows RM. Frex, the one moment that made me SIT UP.

So, there's a point in their conversation in which RM mentions how there was a moment in 2023 when he was feeling adrift and dissatisfied with certain things. Indigo as good of an album as it was, left a lot of stuff out that RM wanted to convey to the listeners and fans. However, in order to give it a honest try, he had to put a lot of space between himself and the rest of the members. And I was like O___O because I 100% feel that, had this been pretty much any other other group*, it would have definitely and irreparably hurt both the relationships and dynamic a lot. Because it's not a great thing to see any member (let alone the leader) state that they need space. [*I'm more than sure that every group has had its ups and downs vis a vis the bond between the members because life isn't static and ppl do change over time. However, I haven't seen something like that discussed by members in a way that reaffirms that the group is stronger now that they've tested the boundaries of the relationships. IDK.]

In any case, the rest of the Tannies' response was "oh, okay, we'll give it to him BUT we will be here in case he needs something from us." Clocking that kind of… emotional intelligence? It was amazing to see Jimin and RM discussing it.

It's also a v. good insight into the flipside of not only being part of THE top group in the world, but also being THE LEADER OF SAID GROUP. Everyone wants to be no.1, the accolade, the fame, etc BUUUUUT there's a lot of stuff that comes with all of that that's not as readily discussed in K-Pop circles from the artists themselves.

Like, I'm sure that 1st and 2nd gen artists have deffo brought those things up (frankly, I wouldn't know). When it comes to 3rd gen (which BTS is a part of), enough time has passed from debut to 2024 that 3rd gen artists can say "this is how things have been, how things are, and what we hope things will be (in the future)". FTR, I think that 4th gen artists are starting to gain some of that perspective, but it's nowhere near 3rd gen artists. The passage of time matters a lot more.

It's so cool to see them talking abt what art means, how art can be expressed, and (in between) they also talk abt the personal.

You've articulated well why I am almost always drawn to the leaders in any group because of the unique added responsibilities and the level of complexities that adds to the relationships, especially when you add in other hierarchies.

I really enjoy the content that you showcase in your posts but also the context! I love learning about the connections between things - because I'm seeing new stuff in order and finding older content but by bit, I don't always see how they relate to each other. And you do it all without making me feel like I'm less of a fan for not knowing it already.
