Originally a quartet (Yeri joined the group in 2015), Red Velvet debuted back in 2014. Just like the rest of SM Entertainment artists, Red Velvet's members most deffo give you the visuals and the extremely beautiful singing expected of idols from that company. Although they can definitely dance, they're not particularly known for that.
However, when the right song comes along, Red Velvet gets down with the best of them.
The reason why, despite not being Reveluv, I do gravitate towards this group is that they love to do quirky-to-murder-y concepts. And, fwiw, the more bizarre the concept, the more I like them because the more original they come across (to me). XD
This is pretty listenable song abt celebrating birthdays. There are some random music switches, but nothing I personally found jarring. The overall mood is more youthful than I've seen from this group in the past 2 or so years (NOT a criticism, just an observation.)
The dance practice
Trigger warning: The camera pans left to right AND follows the members around. If you like static camera dance practices, good luck with this one!
Pretty decent stuff, right? They are definitely graceful. However, the moment this whole choreo shines is during...
The live performance
Trigger warnings: Bright lights, extremely distracting background screens, Kpop music show camera styles (zooming, tilting, etc). Also, there are many fans scream-singing. It might be a bit overwhelming.
There are 2 reasons why I chose this specific early December performance:
1. The live audience lifted the energy up by at least 100%. You can deffo see that the members are thrilled to be performing in front of the v. enthusiastic fans. The ending fairy is sooo cute too!
2. This was the one performance that had fits I liked. OK, so, like most of the girl group in 2022, Red Velvet deffo wore Y2K-inspired fashion. And, like, listen, I lived thru Y2K fashion. It's okay, but not for everyone. OTOH, the styling is present all over the mv (which I've linked below). But, IDK, I felt a bit let down because RV tends to wear fits that set them apart.
The price I paid for choosing this specific performance was that the background graphics are hella disorienting. :|
The music video
Trigger warning: cartoon-style violence; lots of visual f/x
This mv is a lot but it's also hella fun AND has RV at their usual level of whimsy and stabbing. What's not to love?
Bonus
Way back in early January 2020, Red Velvet was still doing promo for their amazing song "Psycho". This is them during an acoustic concert in front of some tremendously lucky fans.
I wanted to share this to highlight Red Velvet's impressive singing abilities. Everyone is amazing not only in delivering the song itself, but also with the ad libbing. My fave part is when Yeri starts laughing mid-rap. It's v. cute.

Their last comeback for 2022 was "Birthday"
