Today's flashback post is a short journey of BTS' dance practices from debut era onward. I'm not including MVs, but I am including 2 videos of the SAME performance for REASONS THAT WILL MAKE SENSE IN THE POST.
This Nov. 2013 (!) video of "Attack on Bangtan" is so interesting. Obvs, everyone is 10 yrs younger, but also the studio is way more modest in terms of space and setting. The dance style leans heavy into something militaristic with random bits of tongue-in-cheek moments.
Four years later, there's this (June 2017) practice for "Not Today". There was NO way I wasn't going to include this one for one specific reason: Jungkook doing a slow-mo roll-to-standing flip from 2:00 to 2:10. If you want to know/keep your eyes on him, he's the one standing by himself at the 0:54 mark; wearing a white sweatshirt with some light blue logo on the chest + dark gray sweatpants.
The formations are stricter in this choreo (which connects it to the MV). Kudos to the backup dancers too!
Uploaded September 2018, the dance practice for "Idol" is one of my faves. Not only do I adore the song, but I also enjoy seeing the Tannies doing their thing, synchronized and energetic.
And so we get to the more current iteration of BTS with this May 2021 "Butter" choreo. Not a spoiler: this is also ANOTHER ONE of my fave songs by them (also the only one of their English songs that truly feel like a BTS song to me. Ymmv, etc). The dancing is v. fresh and joyful; it's nearly impossible to not shimmy along. The dance studio (one of at least 3, iirc) is huge. This was filmed in the new, 19-story HYBE building.
Anyways, although everyone in the group can definitely dance, I do think that the maknae line (Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook) do stand out. FWIW, I'm not sure if it's because their solo parts are more accentuated than the hyung line's or what. Finally, how can I not include a choreo that does a LITERAL SHOUT OUT TO ARMYS?! (βΏββΏββΏ)
Original "Butter" version dropped in May 2012. Fast-forward to August of the same year when a Megan Thee Stallion remix dropped. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the remix elevated the song to a level I don't know I'll ever see again in my lifetime?
ANYWAYS, 3J (Jimin, Jungkook, and J-Hope) did an all-too-short performance video
That STILL MAKES ME GO @ _______ @ WHENEVER I WATCH IT. All three guys bring something to the performance while also just blowing my mind with their moves. It's legit heaven.
Here's a behind-the-scenes of all of the hard work they did in order to film that minute and change video:
The reason the performance was so FLAWLESS is cuz of all their dedication to do the best job possible.
To date, there has only been one (1) performance of the Megan Thee Stallion Remix. It was for Day 2 of the Los Angeles concerts in late November 2021.
Trigger warnings: These two videos are concert footage. Expect a lot of strobe lights, graphics, and occasionally shaky camera (though I made sure to choose the steadier videos I could find).
There's also (understandably as this is FROM THE CONCERT) a lot of fans screaming and singing. Adjust your volume if needed.
This video is so close, you can see everyone's expressions just fine. :DDD
And here's one taken from far away.
BTS might not be a dancers' Kpop group, but they have deffo held their own during their nearly 10-year career. Watching them groove this way and that has brought a ton of joy into my life. :DDDDDDDDD
Let's go back to the beginning...
