Thanks for the reviews, good to know re that one book so as to avoid it. I have enjoyed the hell out of everything Ilona Andrews (the wife/husband team behind the name) put out EVEN THOUGH the relentless heterosexuality of the main characters and the sex scenes that often have too much of the 'she succumbs to her passion for his masculine power' vibe for me BECAUSE the world building (especially Kate Daniels series, but I have also enjoyed the Edge and Inn Keeper series a lot) is fucking outstanding. And, to their credit, there are queer characters and characters of colour even though they are often in more minor roles. Btw, if you like audiobooks, and haven't listened to them, I would highly recommend. The narrator, Renée Raudman, is outstanding. I've 'read' all of Ilona Andrews books as audiobooks and I don't know if I would even adapt to just plain old reading them!
